Catching up with Derek Veilleux 12 - AmeriCorps Member – Great Strides Rural Education Corps Derek joins the staff at Maine Academy of Natural Sciences as an AmeriCorps member, serving in the Humanities Department. Hailing from central Maine, Derek returns after exploring much of New England and traveling abroad. Most recently, Derek spent time in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with the Appalachian Mountain Club. There, he worked with at-risk youth through the Adventure Outreach program and taught environmental education as a Mountain Classroom instructor. Prior to settling in the Whites, Derek worked in the Green Mountains of Vermont as a Wilderness Therapy Guide. A graduate of Colby-Sawyer College, Derek earned his B.F.A in Sculpture and Education. He’s a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and enjoys being back in the area.
