Catholic priests are a wonderful source of support, not just to parishioners, but to brother priests as well. The ability to share many aspects of ministry, prayer, personal joys and struggles is invaluable. What a blessing to have truly honest and caring brothers. So much is published about perverted and abusive priests but seldom is there anything published about the 99.9% of loving, praying, helping and dedicated priests who serve the people and the Church. We are sinners and saints like other people. We are held to a higher standard than most professionals...why else is there so much written about an abusive priest! We are often held in contempt because of those priests. Some of us talk before we think, think too much and say nothing, drink too much or admire too much but we acknowledge our faults and trust in Gods love and mercy. The priests I know are serious about growing closer to Jesus. We laugh at most jokes and cry with the suffering. We rejoice in new life and grieve the loss of life. We worry with parents about their kids and are humbled at the profound level of trust which people share. We love and we are loved. We accept and we give. We are misunderstood and we misunderstand. We generally pray alone, often eat alone and we sleep alone (unless we have a dog or two!) Its a good life because thise is what God had called us to be. Would that everyone could have such a joyful and fulfilling life. Job security is insured. One problem we do have is not encouraging and inviting others convincingly to follow Jesus as we do. Everyone is not called to marry and have a family! The divorce rate proves this. There are more divorces granted than there marriage licenses sought. This life is better off because of those men called catholic priests. Tomorrow, say a prayer for a priest you may know or for one struggling. We need prayers just as much as anyone else. Maybe more.
