Cattell was influenced by many previous theorists. He is deeply indebted to the pioneer work of Charles Spearman and the extensive developments by Louis Thurstone. He did his graduate work with Spearman, which is why his approach to personality is reminiscent of factor analytic approaches to mental abilities. His theoretical formulations are closely related to William McDougalls, whose interest in ferreting out the underlying dimensions of behavior and emphasis upon the self-regarding sentiment is seen in modern dress in Cattells writings. Further, the details of many of Cattells theoretical ideas, especially those related to development, are quite intimately related to the formulations of Sigmund Freud and subsequent psychoanalytic writers.
