Cattitude Feline Behavior Counseling August 3 A male Siamese, five years old, has developed a phobia against the stairs at home. He was reluctant to use them as a kitten, but now he wont ascend without being carried. Nothing upstairs bothers him, its the stairs themselves. Physically all-clear from vet. Source a mystery, but the clients vet wants to start him on a drug. My suggestion: before starting any meds, change the texture of the stairs, even temporarily, until he is comfortable. If only wood, it may be slippery and insecure; cover with soft carpet. Two, consider this tough love. Let the cat get a bit hungry, then put a favorite food on one stair below. Only when hes comfortable with that--and itll just be leaning his neck over, put the bowl (again, when hungry) one stair level below that. Then, only when hes comfy... iIts working, but There Are times I wish I could put these guys on a sofa und talk about der kittenhood. Meantime, consider this kind of desensitization for other phobias, or odd...abhorrences.
