Caught in the Drum Ask our children: 1. If someone has something which you like, can you take it without the person’s permission? 2. Is it better to have a little which belongs to you, or a lot which you have stolen from others? Now tell them the story: Once there was a naughty little boy who lived with his uncle on a farm. All around the farm there were big beautiful trees. The farmers from the nearby farms would often stop for a while and rest under the shade of the trees. Their carts were always full of juicy fruit ready to be sold at the market. When the farmers used to fall asleep while enjoying the cool breeze, the naughty little boy would quietly come and steal some of the best fruit from the carts. Sometimes his uncle would catch him and make him return the fruit. The uncle always reminded him how bad and evil it is to steal, until eventually he promised never to steal again. However, one day as the little boy was playing on the farm he noticed a cart with big tall drums. He was curious to know what was inside the drums. So he quietly climbed up a tree to try and see what was in the drums. As he tried to peep and see what was in the dark deep drums, he slipped and fell into one of the drums. The farmer did not hear a thing and after a while he continued on his journey towards the market place. The drums were empty and were left open to dry. As they approached the market the farmer placed the lids on the drums and closed them. It was now completely dark in the drum, but the little boy was too frightened to even make a sound. It so happened that the little boy’s uncle needed some drums for his farm. So he came to the market, bought the drums from the farmer and took them home. Back home the uncle began to open the drums. He got a shock of his life to find his little nephew hiding in one of them. The little boy told his uncle the whole story. The uncle hugged him and thanked Allah Ta‘ala that his nephew was still alive. From that day, leave stealing, the little boy never went near a farmer’s cart ever again. Lessons: 1. The one who steals eventually gets caught. 2. Do not even go near a sin, you may just get caught up in it. 3. Some people only learn a lesson the hard way. Do not be among them. Learn before you have to suffer the terrible consequences.
