Celebrated Spider, Charlotte, Passes Away Pittsburgh, PA September 23, 2013 -- (AP) Noted spider, Charlotte, died Sunday evening after a brief illness. Rumored to be the driving force behind Wilbur the pig’s first reprieve, Charlotte is uniquely remembered as a literate spider with compassion for others from different species. PETA spokesperson Lindsay Rajt told the Associated Press that Charlotte’s efforts on Wilbur’s behalf were comparable to those of Raoul Wallenberg during World War II. Former President George W. Bush praised the artwork in E.B. White’s stirring account of Charlotte’s rescue project, while a shocked Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli could only exclaim “Chuleta!” upon hearing the news. Charlotte probably was predeceased by her celebrity husband, Boris the Spider, and survived by 514 children. In lieu of flowers, Charlotte’s family has asked that fly larva be donated to the Fern Arable Spider Orphanage Foundation in Dauphin, Pennsylvania.
