Celebrated during the Holy Week, Moriones Festival is a rich cultural religious activity in Marinduque. Playing the role of Roman soldiers, Marinduquenos sing, court, and dance for the ladies, while scaring children away just for fun. As a sort of penance, the men must stand and walk around in the hot sun, while carrying the weight of a wooden mask for the whole day. The wooden material and sometimes stainless shield and armor with thin slippers that they walk on and constant exposure to the elements makes it even more uncomfortable. The festival is not only about the sacrifice and torture of wearing the costume all day, but to reenact the story of Longhinus, the one eyed blind Roman soldier who supposedly stabbed Jesus, who at the time, was erected on the cross. Being on a higher position than Longhinus, Jesus blood spurted Longhinus face then reached his eye and fully restored his sight. The miracle converted Longinus to Christianity, but he was scorned by his fellow centurions who ended up beheading him. Rebecca Navarro Michelle Dela Cruz
