Celebrating 175 Years In Chattooga County, Georgia 1838 – 2013 By Brad Hayes, CCHS Vice President of Publicity The Chattooga County Historical Society invites the public to join them for a picnic and meeting. The Historical Society has invited Robert S. Baker, author of “Chattooga: The Story of a County and it’s People” to speak Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the Historic Summerville Depot. The meeting will begin at 2:00PM. Robert S. Baker is a native of Chattooga County, and the son of the late Joel Edmond Baker (1884-1955) and Bonnie Prickett Baker (1888-1973). Georgia Governor George R. Gilmer signed legislation creating Chattooga County on Friday, December 28, 1838. The creation called for the citizens of Chattooga to “elect five Justices of the Inferior Court, a Clerk of Superior and Inferior Courts, a Sheriff, Coroner, Tax Collector, Receiver of Tax Returns, and a County Surveyor. On Monday, January 28, 1839 the citizens of Chattooga County elected the following officials: William Kellett (Sheriff), T.T. Hopkins (Clerk of Superior Court), J.M. Bibb (Clerk of Inferior Court), John McNeely (Coroner), James Hawkins (Tax Collector), Asbury Comer (Tax Receiver), D.C. Hunter (County Surveyor), and Justices of the Inferior Court were William Crook, Benjamin Echols, Charles A. Heard, Agrippa Moseley, and Humphrey W. Tomlinson.
