Ive been thinking about just this thing... born and raised in Auckland and have lived in a range of burbs from really poor to upper middle class, and our poorer suburbs are much more open and alive.... and in so many ways... safer. We live in a street of old seventies two story sausage flats... quite high density living for early Auckland... and the council has given the street the standard giant row of trees along the verge... and with cars parked everywhere of an early evening... its DARK when most of the young folk around here walk home. Back when it was poorer, (86 we moved here..) everyone left their lights blazing and curtains open. We are on the top floor, and when we do that, 80 metres of dark street pathway get lit up, mind you, so does your lounge.. >.< ... so you have to accept being checked out by all passing traffic.. mind you, people also yelled out hello when they passed too... and people sat on their front lawns, or leaned on fences yarning well into an evening.. Now? Quite an upmarket place really... and the curtains get drawn BEFORE the lights go on a t night... our street looks dark and foreboding... empty and dangerous... :/ Still throwing our curtains open...
