Celebrating Pastor Steves life and ministry, and a personal note... I remember back in the 70s, walking up that long flight of stairs in the back of the building of Independence Hall at Knotts Berry Farm with my family, and hearing the Word and worshipping together in this new Calvary Chapel Buena Park with the young new Pastor, Steve Mays. What a beautiful memory...a beautiful small but growing fellowship, and the love of Christ working through Steve and encouraging His love in us... The first time God pointed me to those in prison was with a man on death row in Stark, Florida...a man who actually went to the same high school as me...a man who was the first one as a young boy to see his dad hanging dead in the garage...someone I only remember as a bad boy and never hung out with...a man who came to the mercy and grace of God as he waited on death row as the courts worked its way through stays of execution and blessed my heart and spirit with his solid faith...a man who was ultimately electrocuted in Florida, and went straight into the arms of His Lord and Savior. His mother didnt have anyone to do the memorial service and asked me if I would ask my pastor, Steve Mays, to do the memorial. I recall briefly going over to Steve and Gails house, bringing a few of the letters of this condemned death row man for Pastor Steve to read...I only know Steve didnt read very much to get a picture, and said a resounding yes that he would perform the memorial. I somehow didnt know of Steves testimony at that time...I only remember feeling so blessed that I could SEE that this precious pastor could clearly SEE with the heart of Christ and understand a taxpayers heart, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. (Luke 18:13) To God be praised that death is swallowed up in life,.. and just imagining...Pastor Steve dancing in Heaven with yet another brother in the Family that he didnt meet on earth but loved with the love of Christ who calls sinners HOME!!!!
