Celebrating at the Savard Family Reunion I had the privilege of spending this past Sunday at a family reunion in St. Charles, Ontario, in the heart of the historic French River Métis community. The Savards reunite once very every three years to catch-up, reminisce, and celebrate their connection as a family. It’s so inspiring to see large Métis families come together, crossing many generations, spending time together, and carrying forward family and Métis traditions, particularly in music and story-telling – in both English and French! And I have to say, there is some amazing talent in the Savard family! Invited by one of our founding Board Members, Helene Savard, this was also our opportunity to present almost 70 people with their membership card, and speak to them about the MFC, and the importance and value of being part of our growing organization. As the interim president, and a long-time friend of Helene, it was also a real pleasure meeting and speaking with so many her extended family, they’re a very warm and welcoming group and were eager to learn even more about the MFC and join me in photos with our flag. We were joined by Karole Dumont Beckett (who has processed all of the applications), and came out to look after the distribution of the membership cards, answer questions, and help with some new applications. This week-end was an example of how one large family tree – as are many in the Métis community – can come together under the banner of the Métis Federation of Canada. I look forward to seeing more families come onboard in the months and years ahead, knowing that together we will only get stronger and more able to provide needed representation and support of Métis people from all regions of Canada.
