And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. 4절 오! 자유인은 사랑하는 가정에서나 황량한 전쟁터에서나 하늘이 구한 이 땅의 승리와 평화로 축복받으리. 우리에게 조국을 건설해 주고, 그 조국을 지켜 준 저 힘을 찬양하라. 우리의 대의가 정당한 한 우리는 반드시 승리하리니, 우리의 모토는, “우리는 신을 신봉한다.” 그리고 승리 속의 성조기는 자유인의 땅, 용맹한 자들이 사는 그 곳에서 휘날리리라! 번역: 이선명 (Harry “Truman” Lee) 미국 국가의 가사 The Star-Spangled Banner를 작사한 Francis Scott Key는 Maryland 주 Frederick County에서 1780년 8월1일 태어나 1843년 1월11일 Baltimore에서 타계했다. 그는 미국의 독립을 위해 싸운 혁명군의 장교였던 John Ross Key의 아들로서, St. John’s 대학에서 수학한 후 그의 숙부였던 Philip Barton Key의 사무실에 근무하면서 법을 공부하고 Maryland 주의 Frederick 시에서 변호사 생활을 하다가, 워싱턴DC의 검사로 활약했다. 1814년 영국군인 워싱턴을 침공하자, Ross와 Cockburn 장군은 Maryland 주 Upper Marloro의 Dr. William Beanes의 농장에 부대 본부를 설치했다. Key는 Sir Thomas Cockburn 휘하의 “Surprise”함대로 편입되어 있는 동안 볼티모어를 공격하는 영국 해군과 미국 혁명군이 Fort McHenry에서 밤새 교전하는 것을 관찰하는 기회를 갖게되었다. Key는 먼동이 트기 시작한 이른 새벽에 미국 수비대 Fort McHenry 요새에 성조기가 나부끼는 것을 보고 영국군에 맞서 싸우던 미국 혁명군이 건재하다는 사실에 큰 감명을 받고 이 감동의 시를 썼다.
