Celebrating the Masters of Imagination! On this date in 1841, American writer Edgar Allan Poes short story - The Murders in the Rue Morgue - was published. Poes story is widely regarded as the first detective story. A locked-room murder mystery, it originated many of the conventions which would be found in future detective novels. Dupin, the storys hero, is a brilliant loner who solves the crime through observation and analysis. He is aided in his efforts by his best friend who also narrates the story. Dupin announces the solution and then explains the step-by-step reasoning he used in his deductions. It has been claimed that The Murders in the Rue Morgue changed the history of world literature. Rightly so.
