Celebritain Interview Shane Filan This week Shane Filan releases his long-awaited debut album, You and Me. Katie B had a chat with him exclusively for Celebritain. We’re LOVING the new material; It’s a completely different sound for you, how confident were you about come back with a new sound? I was a bit nervous about it but also the fact the label loved it helped. It was also the first song I wrote for the album as well, so that was great. It was the most organic, natural sound that happened on that first day in that studio. I just went with it you know, and I thought ok whatever is coming out of this, this is going to be my sound. We kept going back to that sound, it was so different, you know it’s pop music but it’s also folky as well. I was very nervous about what people would think about it when they first heard it, I definitely found it hard to sleep the night before, but once I knew the fans liked it and the radio stations started playing it, it was very cool and actually, it was a relief. Westlife was so successful it almost became like a machine that worked itself, so do you think starting again as a solo artist might actually be more rewarding? I think Westlife, when I look back I realise how massive we were, how selling out O2 arenas were normal and if we didn’t, we’d ask why? People don’t realise when you’re in a machine how successful it is. I’d give my right arm to do that now, you know but you have to work for it. I’d give anything to have a top ten with this single, it’s a process, of course I’d love to be successful but I don’t take anything for granted now. I really hope I can do concerts, I hope I can travel the world again and take this album with me out there, but what will be will be. Success-wise, you can’t compare it to Westlife, we were so big I don’t think we actually realised ourselves, not until you stop and then you look back on it. It’s crazy. Your fanbase will continue with you though won’t it? I think so, I can feel the support already from the Westlife fans. There are other people out there though that have come out of something so big and then it hasn’t worked out so you just don’t know. People might like the first song and not the second, nothing is a given, it is quite scary. You just have to get on with it and think positively rather than negatively. I came to see Westlife about six times and it was all about dance routines and big productions. How is your 2014 tour going to differ? My solo tour will be different, I don’t think I will be playing arenas for starters, I need to find my own personal performance just as I need to find my own way with music. It will be up-tempo though, I’d want to put on a good show. I will definitely sing Westlife songs, I think the Westlife fans would be disappointed if I didn’t but I might put a different twist on them. I’m very much looking forward to doing it, but again, I’ll take it as it comes, each day I’m finding my feet. You must find travelling and hanging out in hotels boring, so what books do you read or what do you enjoy watching on tv? How do you relax? If I’m in a hotel, I watch new release movies, whatever is new. I don’t read books actually, I like to just chill out. I tend to make a few phonecalls and I will then just chill out and watch tv until I fall asleep. I haven’t chance to get into anything recently, I enjoyed watching the Kevin Spacey one with my wife… House of Cards, have you seen that? No, I haven’t, what’s that about? It’s a political drama set in Washington and it’s very, very good. I watch Downton Abbey, Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy. Really, I can’t see you watching things like that? Yes well you know, my wife was really into Desperate Housewives so I watched it all with her, it’s a great light-hearted, funny drama. I love Downton Abbey, it’s one of my favourites. I watch it every week, I sky plus it if I can’t see it. I absolutely love it, it’s my favourite. What about kids tv, do you watch it with your children? Oh yeah! Oh yeah, Peppa Pig. I watch it all the time, I think I’ve seen every episode. My little son Shane, he loves it. We watch it all the time. Patrick loves Spider-Man, Batman… every night I put him to bed and he’s like ‘can I watch Spider-Man Daddy?’ and he’s seen it like a million times, I’ve seen the same episodes so many times I could probably tell you all the words! He just loves superhero stuff. What songs do you sing to your children? I sing my album to them, they’ve heard the demo version, they have heard it all and they have their favourites. They go ‘I don’t like that one Daddy!’, they don’t judge lyrically but they love the tunes you know. I think that’s important though, for kids to like a song it’s really good… and they seemed to like the same songs that the record label liked, so I hope that’s a good thing! Last question, when your tour comes to the Midlands, do you want to come for Pizza with my husband and I because I’ve got a spare three for two voucher at Pizza Express? Pizza Express, you never know! Be sure to come and see me won’t you. Tell the press person about it and you come and see me after the show. I don’t know when it will be yet, I think it will probably be Easter time I don’t know yet myself but we’ll definitely arrange something so thank you for your support. Shane Filan’s You and Me is out now.
