Diana Nyad is an accomplished swimmer and first became world famous for swimming around Manhattan. She instantly became a star but swimming around Manhattan was not enough. She decided her next challenge would be to swim from Cuba to Florida and at the age of 62 she accomplished her goal. Nyad reached Cuba by her profession, swimming, and was able to communicate with Cubans and formed bonds with them. Those of us who cannot swim the 110 miles from Florida to Cuba should still be able to experience the Cuba Nyad was able to experience.
