Cementos Progreso, owned by the Castillo family, one of the most powerful oligarchic families in Guatemala, has been at odds with indigenous Kakchikel communities for quite some time. Here is a translation of the statement that accompanies this photo: "Today, Friday, July 5th, the Kakchikel communities from San Juan Sacatepéquez are rejecting the establisment of a cement plant on their territory. A peaceful protest numbering 15,000 people is marching towards teh community of Lo del Ruiz, where the cement plant is being inaugurated, to the town of San Juan Sacatepéquez where the local mayor Fernando Bracamonte would receive an offering as a reminder that he should respect the will of the people."
