Cathy McNulty January 30, 2014 Schoharie Medical Society Renews Support for Fracking Moratorium The Schoharie County Medical Society has passed the second resolution in a year calling for a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing within the County “until valid scientific information is available that would permit evaluating the process for its potential effects on human health and the environment.” The Center for Sustainable Rural Communities, which has sponsored presentations on the impacts of fracking on human health by endocrinologist Amy Freeth, applauds the Medical Society for underscoring the need to protect the health and safety of area residents from the reckless practice of hydrofracking. Community Outreach Update Center for Sustainable Rural Communities Board member Robert Nied will be a guest lecturer for the SUNY- Cobleskill Environmental Science Department this semester discussing the impacts of hydraulic fracturing on rural ecosystems. Nied will also present a program on the challenge of building sustainable communities while facing the threat of fracking and pipelines, in cooperation with Sustainable Hilltowns, at the Medusa Fest event in Medusa, NY on May 3, 2014. Art for Activism The Center for Sustainable Rural Communities will be presenting an installation by artist Norm Magnusson whose art of social conscience includes custom cast historical markers, which display a point of view on important topics of concern to communities including environmental, cultural and social justice issues. Magnusson will present a talk on the motivations and techniques of his work at the show’s opening in late April 2014. The Center will help install up to six markers at various locations in Schoharie County. The show will be partially funded by a Community Arts/Decentralized Grant through the Green County Council on the Arts (the administrator for the Schoharie County program). Landowner Response Team The Center for Sustainable Rural Communities would like to remind residents whose property is impacted by the proposed Constitution Pipeline that they can call the Center’s Landowner Response Team toll-free number: 800-795-1467 if they believe survey crews or other representatives of the pipeline company have entered their property without permission.
