Central Beats Cougars in Opener #7 Central Washington (3-0 15 Pts) came to Pullman to defeat the Cougars 69-0. CWU brought the full A-Side squad to play, with multiple players on or previously on high level age grade representative teams. In the Wildcats previous two NCRC games they had played their second side to much success but it was time for the first side to get a run out. Compounding the issue, the Cougars were without a few starters due to illness and injury, forcing players to used out of position. Excuses aside, the Cougar side got to see first hand what has gotten Central to the position they are. The Cougs were starved of possession throughout the game as the Wildcats dominated the set pieces, secured their own rucks amazingly quickly, and turned over multiple isolated runners for WSU. After spending most of the first half playing defense the Cougs were able to start playing offense in the second half and overall put in more true performance in the second half. On the positive side, the Cougars were able to piece together several phases once they recognized the pace of the breakdown. Defensively, WSU was able to match them in close quarters but were bitten on third, fourth and fifth phase play. Several players stepped up and fought through injuries. Both David Stoecker and Blaze Yetter had to be subbed off for blood but both returned after being attended to. Captain Casey Smith and Flyhalf Nate Freimund were both obviously frustrated but kept their composure. An eye opener for sure, but this squad now knows what to expect when they travel to play CWU in the spring.
