#Central_Governor_Opposes_Trans_Island_Highway Source: Post Courier, Oct 10,2014. BY DENYSE KALAU CENTRAL Governor Kila Haoda opposes the National Government’s plans to build a national highway that will link Port Moresby with the rest of Papua New Guinea. Mr Haoda’s comments come following recent media reports that there were plans to build a national highway that will pass through Gulf and Central provinces. Mr Haoda said his major concern was if the Government approves the highway, his people would become victims of social issues when more and more people decide to settle illegally on their land while using their resources, leaving them with nothing. This was the reason why the governor, other Central leaders and LLG presidents in Central have all decided to stand together and oppose the Government’s plans. They leaders drafting a petition that they will present in the coming session of Parliament. The petition will basically be telling the Government that the people of Central Province feel it is not the right time to bring the huge development to their place, rather they want their leaders to focus on building roads in the province that will connect all Papuan villages first, before moving to other provinces, he said. Although the initiative taken by the National Government will benefit the country, the people in Central province are not fully prepared to support the Government’s plan as yet. All the leaders have the right to petition the government on the matter. Mr Haoda said the only supporter of the highway among the Central MPs is Abau MP Sir Puka Temu, who is Public Service Minister. He said although leaders may have different views on the petition, it was important that they all stand together and to form a committee to look at the issue further.
