Certainly finding the “best fit” college and getting into it - TopicsExpress

Certainly finding the “best fit” college and getting into it is one of the most important things a high school student can do, but almost of equal value is exploring potential majors. Of course the two go hand-in-hand to a certain extent. A “best-fit” college would not be so “best-fit” if it didn’t offer the field of study the student is interested in. This would be an obvious consideration for high school counselors to introduce, but at large public schools where the counselor might be responsible for 200 or more students and only able to allot 30% of the work-day to meeting with students, one-on-one college counseling is out of the question. Consequently when many students get to college they only have an idea of what they might want to major in. When required to declare a major, often during the second half of their sophomore year, many students choose one that at the moment “feels” right. The next year they discover that the major that once felt right no longer does, so they switch. The new major demands different requirements and thus more time. So instead of four years, the student needs five, sometimes six year to earn the degree--two more years of borrowing for tuition payments and two fewer years of earning income. Decisions are not necessary for future college students, but planning definitely is.
