Challenged by Mark Walker to name 10 books that have stayed with me. I think I did this a couple of years ago but the list is different now I expect. So. 1. Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier, brilliant, as we all know. Tove Jansson, Moominpappa at Sea - the most existential of all her childrens books - Moominpapa has a midlife crisis and makes all his family move to an island where they all have a pretty horrid time. 3. The Empress of Ireland, a brilliant biography of a British film director at the tail end of his career: gay subject, straight biographer (Christopher something or other) - wonderful bond between the two. 4. The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett, a book for anyone who likes growing things. 5. Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida - a book about thinking about looking at representations that doesnt bore the arse off you. 6. Famous for 15 Minutes, Ultra Violet, from which I learned that freaky people had kids too. 7. Anything by Muriel Spark, but in particular, The Girls of Slender Means. 8. Elizabeth David, French Provincial Cooking, which I was reading today and have had by my bedside for years on and off 9. Karen Joy Fowler, We are all Completely Beside Ourselves, because its what I enjoyed most this summer and 10. Emma Donaghues The Room for sheer spooky voyeuristic wallowing in vileness. I could go on.....
