Chamber News Feed: Kingswood, NJ: With the Delaware River down to a safe level and a state concessionaire contract in hand, Greg Crance opened the Delaware River Tubing season last weekend, June 22 and 23. The operation is impaired by chain link fences at the river’s edge at two of the three Kingwood Township sites Crance usually uses, the site near Fairview Road where his buses drop off customers wanting a three hour inner tube ride, and the site near the ruins of the Byram Point Pleasant Bridge, where his customers usually come ashore. So last weekend, customers could have a long ride only putting in at the Kingwood Boat Ramp just south of Frenchtown and getting out at the Byram Boat Ramp, which is downstream from the riverside hamlet of Byram. He hopes that by next weekend the state Department of Environmental Protection will give him the keys to the gates at the two sites, so his operations can return to normal. Crance and the state of New Jersey are still working out the details of their new relationship. The state offered him and anyone else the chance to bid for the right to continue using the riverside state parkland in Kingwood that Crance has been using for years. Crance has to pay $100,000 a season, which is based on 50,000 customers at $2 each. Crance does not expect that many tubists, and hopes eventually to negotiate a fee based on $1 per actual customer. He also sends customers down the river on rafts and in canoes and kayaks. Meanwhile, Crance is seeking zoning variances from the township to allow him to establish a staging and storage area at a lot he owns about 500 yards north of the Kingwood Boat Ramp. Currently customers get their tubes on the Flemington Roller Rink property, where they park their cars, pay their money and board retired school buses.
