Chap 5. Hooper Dunbars Forces book. Helping a Society in travail. Upon our efforts depends the fate of humanity. Understanding the role of God in human affairs, however, does not give Bahá’ís permission to become complacent and leave the world’s problems for Him to solve miraculously on His own. On the contrary, we are exhorted to be ‘anxiously concerned with the needs of the age ye live in, and centre your deliberations on its exigencies and requirements’[120] and to ‘turn [our] faces from the darkness of estrangement to the effulgent light of the daystar of unity.’[121] In His Most Holy Book, Bahá’u’lláh calls upon us to ‘assist’ God ‘with works of righteousness, and also through wisdom and utterance’.[122] We cannot think that all we have to do is wait until catastrophe strikes and then go sweep up afterwards. We are responsible, as the bearers of the Word of God in this Day, to exert ourselves to the utmost both to shorten this painful period in history by ensuring that Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation is understood and to assuage human suffering to the extent possible. As the Universal House of Justice said in a sobering message dated October 1967, ‘Upon our efforts depends in very large measure the fate of humanity.’
