Chapter 38: Going from Hillhouse to Yale, early and unofficially ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Like most of the Ivy League, Yale University was “boys only” for most of its existence. It finally became coeducational in 1969, after 268 years of complaining. Before the female students arrived, in an effort to provide a somewhat more normal social life for its cloistered male scholars, the university hosted “mixers” where freshmen could meet, dance with, and perhaps mate with female students from local colleges. Since Yalies were considered to be good husband material, the girls who attended the mixers often revealed a bit more cleavage than on their regular campuses (especially in a Catholic school like nearby Albertus Magnus College). They also wore shorter skirts, and were said to be more likely to get into bed on a first date than on a date with a non-Yalie. This reputation (whether true or false) was well-known and resulted in packed dance floors. Theoretically the only males who were admitted were Yalies, but it wasn’t hard for an enterprising New Haven high school senior to make a fake Yale student ID. The promise of abundant loose women stimulated convincing counterfeiting. (The fake cards were also good for admission to Yale’s tennis courts and golf course.) At one Saturday night mixer early in my senior year at Hillhouse I spotted a good looking girl who turned out to be an “Aggie Maggie” — a student at Albertus Magnus. Beverly didn’t ask to see my ID and never actually asked if I was a Yalie or asked a campus question I couldn’t answer. She was majoring in secondary school education and came from Boston. We danced, and talked, and eventually left the mixer with a few other girls and genuine Yalies I knew. We went to continue the partying in a freshman dorm suite. We enjoyed Yago Sangria, grass, Dylan and the Beatles. We danced and made out and probably would have gone all the way but Beverly realized what time it was and had to get back to school before the 1AM curfew. I walked her back to her dorm, got her phone number, and we had a good goodnight kiss. I was looking forward to seeing Beverly again, but I was surprised at how soon I would see her and where we would be. On the following Monday in Mrs. Leightons English class, our teacher introduced several student teachers who would be observing our instruction. One of them was Beverly from Albertus Magnus. I tried to hide behind my notebook, but eventually Beverly spotted me. I blushed. She smiled. Then we both laughed. I called her and we dated a few times. We lost our virginities together. She was my first “older woman,” but not my last. - - - - - (Note: This chapter is fiction. I was a virgin in high school.)
