Chapter Two “But what if I don’t know what to do?” I was really panicking now, I didn’t want to do this, but it seemed that I had no other choice. “Please Regan” I begged him. “Can’t you find me something else, here in the afterlife. I don’t think I can do this, what if I mess it all up and make it worse, what then?” Regan took me aside from the others, looking at them before he turned to look back down at me. “Demi I know you can do this and it is not like we are sending you out there with a team of inexperienced souls” he smiled at me. “You are going on this first mission as your training and you won’t mess it up and you will do a great job” he patted my arm reassuringly. “Drake” he called to the tall blonde guy in my team who instantly responded to his name. “Demi here is nervous, will you look after her and show her the ropes” “Of course I will” he replied, smiling at Regan before turning to look at me. “You are going to have such fun; this is one of the best jobs that you can get in the afterlife. Don’t be nervous, you should be honoured” he left me and Regan alone again. “You will be fine” he squeezed my shoulder. “Now go with your team; they are waiting on you” “You will be here when I return?” I asked him, still not wanting to leave the safety of the afterlife to return back to the earth plane again, only this time I will be in spirit form. “See you soon” I turned and walked towards my team, looking them over when I stood next to them, waiting for the train to pull in. Well it sounded like an approaching train and was held on tracks like a train, it just didn’t move like a train. The glass capsule came closer and I knew then that it was far from train like, climbing into it when it stopped I sat behind the small girl Gemma and held on tightly when it started to move way too fast to be real. But nothing was ever going to be normal for me again, not since I died. A few seconds later I felt the capsule pull up to a stop. “We are here; everyone out” Drake called out to us and I opened my eyes again, feeling a little wobbly I combed back out of the capsule and watched it disappear right before my every eyes. “Listen up” Drake huddled us all closer together. “This is the place that we are going to be cleansing” he pointed to the huge mansion behind him. “There are eight year old triplets who have been haunting the place for two hundred years and have kept refusing to move on into the afterlife and your job here today is to try and convince them to move on. I am not going to lie to you, this isn’t going to be an easy task to accomplish, but if we all use our heads, then I am sure that this is going to be the time when they finally leave their old home and move on to an even better one. Are you all with me” we all cried out yes. “I can’t hear you, I said are you all with me” he cried out even louder and we all started to cheer even louder than he had cried out. “Then follow me” The three of us followed Drake up the main steps to the open front door and we all snuck inside, I hid behind a tall floor standing flower display. “You are dead remember” Drake laughed at me. “The living won’t be able to see you unless they are psychic, but I have already checked and there are none staying at this hotel” he told me and feeling like a complete idiot I stepped back out from my hiding place and followed him up the stairs to the first floor landing. “I thought this was a house” I heard Gavin the short young guy with curly black hair ask Drake. “It used to be, but since the triplets died their family sold it on and it remained empty for a hundred years until it was sold on again and turned into a hotel. But the triplets hang around, not knowing what else to do. They have only known this place” he turned to face us all, stopping half way up the stairs. “They are wild and boisterous, so whatever you do, please be careful” “So sorry” I said to the guy I almost walked straight into coming down the stairs and I heard Drake and the others start to giggle again. “I forget, sue me” I huffed walking up the rest of the stairs on my own, leaving them all laughing after my stupidity once more. Fuming I walked into the first bedroom I came across, blending into the shadows I watched a young man and woman unpacking their suitcases. “Cute dress” I told her when she pulled out a cream and lilac dress from off the top of the suitcase. “Thank you” she replied, shocking me into a frozen state. “Who are you thanking darling” the guy looked back from the closest, frowning at her. “The girl who just told me that this was a cute dress” she told him, looking around the room and I held my hand over my mouth to stop myself from gasping again. “I must be hearing things again” she frowned back at him. “You have been hearing things quite a lot recently. Maybe when we get back home, you should go and see the doctor, I think you might be taking onto much at work again and stressing yourself out” slipping back out of the room I walked down the corridor, hearing childish giggles coming from the room I slipped in through the closed door and spotted two of the boys throwing clothes and shoes around the room, hearing me enter they both turn and glare at me. “You are not going to make us leave” the bigger one shouted at me, his eyes shining brightly through the darkness. “We are not going to leave ever” he shirked at me, his eyes was all I saw and I flew back through the door out into the hallway panting, my insides shaking. They were much more scarier than I would have thought the average eight year old could be. “Calm down Demi” I told myself walking in to another room. “Why are you so afraid of two eight year old little boys” I scolded myself sitting down on the edge of the huge bed. “They are dead and have scary eyes, but you are dead also girl and you are older than they are. Well not technically, but they died at eight years old and over two hundred years ago, so yeah, you are older than them” I stood up and that was when I noticed the man sleeping in the bed alone. “Sorry, I didn’t see you there” I mumbled walking back out of the room again. “Get a grip, you have to remember that you are dead now Demz” I giggled with my hand over my mouth walking through the wall and into the next room. “Hello my name is Demi” I told the eight year old boy that was stood on top of the dresser with a book held high in his hand, ready to aim it at the old couple sleeping peacefully in bed. “Put the book down and get down from there at once” I scolded him. “Make me” he chuckled throwing the book at me, ducking I realised too late that it went straight through me and hit the wall behind me, not waking the old couple. “Stupid girl. Stupid, stupid, stupid girl” he sang on the top of his voice running along the dresser and up[ onto the book shelve, kicking books over as he went in signing. “Stupid girl, stupid dead girl, stupid, stupid, stupid dead girl” sitting down on the top shelve he started to launch more books at my head. “Stop it and get down from there” I shouted at him. “Right now you naughty insolent little boy” “Make me” he shouted back before poking his tongue out at me, angering me even more. “You don’t scare me old lady ghost” he threw at me laughing before jumping through the wall into the next room. “I am twenty one you little” I couldn’t finish my own sentence through my anger and I wasn’t about to let three eight year old little boys get the better of me, following behind him through the wall I found him and his other two brothers jumping on the bed with the young man and woman I had saw when I walked through that first bedroom and she was screaming with her partner trying to calm her down again. “I don’t feel anything” he told her again and I heard the worry creeping out of his voice for her state of mind. “You three get down off the bed and behave” I shouted at them, rubbing my hands over my temples, feeling stressed out by these little monsters. “Make us, make us, make us, you can’t stop us to make us behave” they sung in unison, making my insides cringe from the deep menacing voices that flowed eerily from their sweet little mouths, their blue eyes shining a vivid orange again. “Just shut up” I shouted at them and they instantly fell quiet, shocked I turned around and saw three little curly blonde heads looking at me, frozen to the spot on the bed. “How dare you” the smaller one bellowed at me, leaping from of the bed and stood glaring up at me. “There are four of them” I heard the girl whisper to her partner. “A young woman and three little boys” “You probably just had a vivid dream” he tried to soothe her, but she was proving to scare him more than we were scaring her. “No” she told him. “I think she might be their mother” “Mother” I was more than shocked, I was livid. “These boys are not mine, they are naughty, rude and need to learn that they have to pass over” “No, she isn’t the mother. But she is here to try and help them to pass over into the light” I looked at her frowning, what the hell was she on about light. “We are not crossing over” the little one shouted at me again. “We live here, we have always lived here and there is no way that you can make us” he ran through the wall and out into the corridor, the other two following quickly behind him and I guessed that the little one was the leader out of the triplets. Following behind them I was lucky enough to see the foot of the last one disappearing through a little door way and instantly I followed behind them. “Stop following us” he shouted at me. “Go away lady or you will be sorry” I stood there frozen to the spot while he grew twice the size of me, his head expanding three times the size of his own body, his eyes glowing red with his teeth all pointy and dripping with blood. “GO AWAY” “You don’t scare me little boy” I found my voice again and hoped he wouldn’t hear it shaking. “Not when I was killed in life by a real vampire you don’t” He started to laugh, spinning in the air with his hands on his stomach and the other two followed suit and fell onto the floor giggling. “Dumb as well as stupid” he remarked, pulling himself back together again. “We all know that vampires aren’t real” “Then you must be the dumb one then” I said walking away from him and heading out of the room, slipping through the wall I stood shaking in the hallway. “Oh my god, what am I going to do?” I thought to myself closing my eyes, jumping after someone tapped me on the shoulder I spun and came face to face with the ring leader. “Tell me about the vampires” he said quietly. “I would like to know how you died” he crossed his legs and floated in the air in front of me at eye level. “I am sorry for scaring you, my name is Edward and these are my brothers Richard and William” I smiled at the three of them. “What is your name” “My name is Demi Edward” I smiled back at the cute little boy still floating in front of me. “Nice to meet the three of you” “Are there really vampires out there?” I felt William tugging eagerly at my hand. “Do they have really sharp teeth and red eyes” “Yes there really are and my boyfriend Felix is a vampire and his friend Shay who is half witch half vampire killed me by draining all of my blood” I intensively felt the side of my neck where she had bitten me. “Yuck” Richard and Edward said at the same time, pulling faces at me. “That was just what I thought too” I replied giggling. “So, do you three want me to tell you how amazing the afterlife is” my first and last mistake was talking about them moving on into the afterlife, they three of them turned on me again. “We are not going anywhere” Edward shouted at me. “And you can’t make us” “It is ok to be afraid” I whispered to him, crossing my own legs and surprising myself when I started to float in front of him and he glared back at me. “I am not scared of anything” he snapped back, folding his arms across his chest and turning his head so that he didn’t have to look at me. “It is ok to be afraid of change” I told him, smiling at him. “I was afraid the first time I was forced to pass over by Shay. But once I got there and realised there was nothing to be afraid of and I love it there now” “That is you and you are a big baby cry pants and we are not moving and there is nothing you can say to us that will make us move” he barked at me, making me feel his anger. “So if I were you I would run away like the rest of them” “Edward I am not going to be running anywhere” I told him, folding my arms across my chest too, pulling a sad face. “So if I have to stay here for the rest of forever watching you three and keep you as good little boys, then so be it” his head snapped back to look at me. “No, you are not welcome here” he told me, trying to force his voice to go deeper, but failed and I heard the undercurrent of pain at being left to defend for themselves when they had died at such a young tender age. “Well neither are you anymore” I smiled back at his scowling face. “But that hasn’t stopped you from leaving” “This is our house” he barked. “And no one is going to take it from us” “It isn’t your house anymore Edward. It hasn’t been for a long time and if you were honest with yourself, then you would know that” I floated back down to the floor again, turning my back I started to walk away from them. “But I sure am going to miss everything in the afterlife to stay here with you there” “Yeah, like what” he snapped at me, trying to make his voice sound amusing, but failed yet again. “Oh you know, everyday things” I half turned to look back at them. “Like eating pizza and watching a movie or being able to play outside in the sun or kick a football around in the park” “We can’t eat, we are dead and if you think you can fool us” Edward snapped back. “You are dumber than I first gave you credit for” “In the afterlife you can eat. Well in the afterlife you can do anything” I told them walking away again. “Tell us more” I felt my hand being taken from either side and looking down I saw both Richard and William smiling back up at me. “Tell us more” William pleaded with me, his eyes now a bright blue. “Don’t be fooled brother, I have already told you that once you move on, that is it, game over” Edward snapped at them. “Don’t be stupid enough to go with her” “I think she is telling us the truth” Richard told him, before turning back to me again. “He is afraid of passing over” “No I am not” he bellowed. “I am not afraid of anything” “Then prove it by passing over with us” I smiled at him, holding out my hand towards him. “What?” he stuttered shocked. “I said if you are not afraid then prove that you’re not by crossing over into the afterlife with us” I repeated. “Because by not crossing over you are only proving to yourself and your brothers, not forgetting me and the numerous others that have come to help you, that you are not afraid and you will do so by crossing over” “Ok” he floated down onto the floor in front of me, taking my hand into his. “I will cross over with you and my brothers” “You are so brave” I smiled down at him. “Let’s go and find the others so that we can ride a really fast spaceship thing” they all cheered when I lead them down the stairs and towards the front door. “Drake, we are ready to leave now” “I don’t think they are here anymore” Richard frowned up at me. “Then I will take you back all on my own” I replied leading them out the front door and down the main steps towards the little glass capsule. “Is that the spaceship” Edward beamed a bright smile up at me and I nodded. “This is so cool” he ran towards it with his brothers and it opened up and the three of them jumped inside. Climbing in behind them the door closed again. “Hold on tight, this is going to get pretty fast” then we were off, shooting through the garden like a speeding bullet and again I closed my eyes. The capsule slowed down and came to a gradual stop, opening my eyes I saw three excited faces beaming back at me. “We ate here boys” I smiled back, climbing out of the capsule again, with the three of them right on my heels. “Are we really here” William was as excited as a kitten, moving around my legs, all eager to meet his new world finally after two hundred years of being cooped up in that big house. “Yes, we really are here” I told them leading them into the little room I had left a few hours before, walking in I saw Regan and the others and they all turned to look at the four of us, shocked and then instant happiness washed all over their faces. “She did it” Regan rushed over to me and hugged me. “You did it, you saved three little boys from loneliness and misery” they all started to clap and cheer for me, I glanced down at the triplets, who looked sad all of a sudden. Moving away from Regan I made my way back towards them again and crouched down to their level. “Guess who has been waiting patiently all this time to see you guys” I smiled at them, pulling them on for a hug. “Who” they all sung out excitedly again. “I don’t know, turn around and see for yourself” “Mummy, Daddy” they cried out running towards them, tears in their eyes. “We didn’t know where you went” I stood up and watched a tall blonde guy leading them off into another room, Edward turned and looked back at me. “Thank you” he mouthed before the door closed again, I was so happy for them and I felt great at the great thing that I had done for a family. “I can’t wait until my next job” I told Regan. “I told you that you could do it” he beamed at me, and they all started to cheer my name again. “For two hundred years thousands have gone to try and get them back home on numerous occasions and then you go and bring them back on your first day as a ghost hunter” he couldn’t believe his own words and neither could I. “I am so proud of you” “Hello again little Miss Ghost hunter” I turned on my heels on hearing the sweet voice, my insides slipping over. “Great job” Ian smiled down at me holding his hand out towards me and I took it, shaking it. “Thank you Ian” I didn’t know what else to say to him, my mind ran away from me, leaving behind a gibbering wreck. “I didn’t think that I would see you again” he told me and I heard the pain in his words flowing to wash over my senses. “And I am so glad that I have. I have to go to work now, see you around” he smiled at me, walking away with the rest of his team. “ I really hope to see you again” “Me too” I wanted to tell him that I didn’t want to let him go away again, because I was afraid of not seeing him again. Remembering Regan’s words to me about if it was meant to be then it would be. “Have fun” I shouted after him, my smile filling me up inside. Standing there watching him climb into the capsule I watched him disappear back out of my life again, feeling a little down after my high I turned back to my team. “I am going to go back to my apartment and have a long soak in the bath” walking away I feared for the rest of my afterlife without the one thing that I had hoped to be a part of it, not walking back into my life again. I didn’t’[t want to have to think about not seeing him again, I should have been feeling happy about seeing him again and I was, but watching him leaving squashed that happiness back down inside me once again. Closing my eyes I walked through a door and out the other side into my loft. Once there I didn’t know what it was that I should be doing with myself, so I went to sit on the window seat and watched the sun settling down over the vast city that seemed to wake back up again in front of my unmoving eyes. Seeing him again woke a powerful sensation deep inside me, it felt both wonderful and scary. Could I really afford to fall in love with him, I knew the answer was no, but I still couldn’t stop myself from falling deeper. Watching the skyline I started to smile at the splendid sight in front of me, imaging me and Ian exploring the whole city together. I had no idea how long I sat there on the window seat gazing out of the window thinking of Ian, but I knew I watched the sun make a start to get ready to rise again. “Coming” I called out when I heard the door go, walking slowly towards it, thinking it was either Miles or Alex. “Hello little Ghost hunter” Ian smiled at me, holding in his hand a pizza box and a bottle of red wine in his other hand. “I think we need to toast our new jobs and I couldn’t think of anyone I could rather celebrate with then you Demi” “Come on in” I couldn’t believe my eyes, feeling a little scruffy I headed towards the bedroom. “Make yourself at home and I will be back in a moment” I told him before heading up the stairs, looking down at myself I changed the black cat suit into a pair of faded torn jeans and a white vest top. Pulling my hair up into a messy bun I headed back down into the living area and saw that Ian had also changed his black long sleeve top and trousers into a pair of black jeans and a red t-shirt. “So how did your first Ghost hunting job go” I asked him sitting down on the sofa next to him. “I went really well” he replied handing me my glass of wine. “There was a woman held trapped in a tower by her own pain of losing her new born baby to natural causes and she was so traumatised that she wasn’t able to leave the tower room after. I managed to talk her around and now she has been reunited with her baby and the man she loved. I feel great after my first job and I know you do too. I had heard that your first job was one of the hardest they had and you did it. I am so proud of you Demi” he held his own glass towards mine and we clinked them together. “I am proud of you too” I smiled at him. “I am not going to lie and say that it was easy, because at first they were little monsters and they did scare me. But the moment that I realised that they were just three scared, bewildered and unhappy little boys, it was easy to get them all around to my way of thinking. I am happy that they can now finally move on and find some peace at last” “To us” Ian said and we clinked our glasses again. “To us” I repeated him and he grinned back at me. “So where are you now living” I asked him, really hoping he would tell me that is isn’t that far from where I lived. “I live a few miles out, but when you can cross the city within seconds, it really isn’t that far” he reached and took a slice of pizza. “This pizza is still as amazing as the one you had got” he took a little bite out of it, chewing while he looked thoughtful. “Do you have any plans for tomorrow?” “No” I replied, my stomach flipping over again. “Good, keep it that way and I will come and pick you up and take you over to my place” I reached for a slice of pizza, so excited to be spending the day with him.. “How are you handling death?” “I am kind of loving it” I told him honestly, and all the better for finding you again, I didn’t tell him that but I felt that he already knew and felt the same way about me. “You?” “Loving it too” he smiled at me, topping up both of our glasses. “You both have to come with us” Regan told me, walking towards us with another guardian, whom I assumed was Ian’s. “Demi this is Charlie” Ian introduced me to the beautiful brunette with bright green eyes. “My guardian” “Nice to meet you Charlie” I said politely. “But why do you need us both to come with you?” I was confused and we were having such a lovely time. “There is an emergency job and all the Ghost hunters are busy on other jobs and you were scored the highest out of all the new teams, so you both have to come with us” Standing back up we followed them out of the loft and into the lift and down a few floors, reaching the bottom we all walked out into the leaving room. “Ian, you and Demi are going to have to stick together with this one” Charlie told him, changing his clothes into the Ghost hunting suit and then she changed mine. This time they were black, with a pale blue edging. “Just be careful and please try and work as fast as you can and hurry back” “Have fun too” Regan smiled at us while he waited on the platform for the capsule to arrive. “I know this isn’t the usual protocol and is breaking all the rules on Ghost hunting as you are both still so new at it. But believe me, if there was any other way that we could keep you two out of it, we would, but there isn’t” The glass capsule arrived and we both climbed into it and the door closed on us, encasing us both inside it together. “Hold onto me” Ian told me and I did, I didn’t need telling twice when the capsule started to move way too fast again. Leaning my head on his shoulder I closed my eyes. “We are here” I heard him whisper to me and I opened my eyes again, wishing that the journey had taken a little longer. “What is this place” I said aloud and saw Ian leaning into the front of the capsule. “A school” he frowned, looking back at me. “A school” I gasped looking at the huge dark foreboding building again, grateful that I had Ian with me. “But who would haunt a school?” “It says here” Ian held out the little watch. “That it is the old headmistress” “But why” I asked him, watching him strap the watch thing onto his wrist. “She burnt whilst trying to protect her pupils from a bombing and now she won’t leave again until she finds the pupils she lost sight of and now it is up to us to make her see that they have all moved on into the afterlife” “This place is seriously creepy” I said quietly following Ian up to the side of the school. “I don’t think I could ever haunt a place like this” Ian started to giggle. “What kind of place would you haunt then” he turned to wink back at me. “Well somewhere that is pretty and light, I don’t think I would be happy haunting in the dark” slipping inside the kitchen I felt a dark presence, looking back behind me I half expected to see her face looming over me, turning back to face the way I was heading I walked straight into the back of Ian. “Sorry” I whispered to him. “Can you hear that?” he asked me and I shook my head. “I can’t hear anything” I said, feeling more frightened than when we arrived here. “What is it, I don’t hear anything” “Exactly” he replied moving out of the kitchen and into the main hallway of the school. Putting his finger to his lips he mouthed for me to follow him and silently we both moved down to the end of the hallway and turned left into the library. The room was completely dark and still, no sounds breaking through the ominous silence. Everything looked to be safe and in its right order. I felt silly for my fear, but something kept gnawing away at the pit of my stomach. “Ian” I whispered to him in the darkness, the sound echoing around the room like an earthquake. “What are you doing trespassing in my school” a voice boomed out from behind us and I flew into Ian, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Get out of my school now before I call the police and have you delinquents thrown into jail” I peeked over Ian’s shoulder at the dark mass that stood almost eight foot in front of us. “GET OUT OF MY SCHOOL” the headmistress bellowed deafeningly loud, blowing my hair back like a gale-force wind. “NOW” she was shrieking, the words inaudible. “Ian what are we going to do?” I was frantic now, desperate to get out of there and back to my loft. “She is mad” “I know” he replied looking down at the watch he wore on his wrist. “It says here that she is just lost” Ian stepped a few paces towards the head mistress, both his hands out in front of him. “Miss Jameson” he said kindly. “I know you are sad and lonely in this big place all by yourself and we are only here to help you and take you” he never got to finish speaking, she screamed at him and he flew through the air and through the bookcase behind us and then was gone into a different room, leaving me all alone with the frightening headmistress. “That wasn’t very nice” I stood firm with my hands on my hips, tight lipped and I glared up at her, hoping that the same approach with the naughty little boys would work on her. “I think you should go and apologise to Ian right this instance, don’t you?” big mistake, I was sent sprawling across the floor, hitting my head on a heavy desk. Sitting up I rubbed at the painful spot on the back of my head. “Ow” I said quietly to myself. “That wasn’t rude at all” “GET OUT OF MY SCHOOL” she shouted at me when I stood back up a little wobbly now. “With pleasure” I snapped back. “You are welcome to this school and they are welcome to you, you horrid woman. It is no wonder you are a bitter person and no one likes or wants you. And as far as I am concerned the afterlife is much better off without you. You are far to mean to go to the same place that all your pupils and loved ones have gone too. Because they are nice decent beings and quite frankly, you are not” walking through the wall I spotted Ian lying on the floor next to a computer chair, rubbing his head. Turning I felt her presence behind me, closing my eyes I bit my lip as I mentally prepared myself to be thrown through the wall. A few seconds later I opened them again and turned around to face the headmistress, my insides a shaken mess of nerves. “I am a nice person” she said quietly. “Oh really” I replied in my most scathing voice I could muster under the scary conditions I found myself in. “So throwing innocent people around the room and through walls is considered a polite way to behave, I think not” “I am nice once you get to know me” she pleaded with me, trying to make me see just how much of a nice person she was. “Forgive me if I don’t see it in you” I walked and stood face to face with her. “All I can see is a mean bitter woman who goes around hurting others who are younger and weaker than she is. Miss Jameson, you are nothing but a bully and you deserve to spend forever on your own” “I am so sorry” she begged me, dropping down onto her knees as she floated in front of me. “I don’t want to be a bully, I really don’t. But I have to protect my school; you must be able to see that” I shook my head. “No I don’t see it and if you will excuse me I need to go and check on my friend now” “All I have ever wanted was to protect my school and my children” she said when I knelt next to Ian. “I just want to protect them” Standing back up after Ian started to come around again, I turned back to face her. “The only person this school and its children need protecting from is you. You are the one that is ruining this school and you are forcing a great school to close down and when that happens it is going to end up another abandoned building and then what will your bitterness have got you, huh? I will tell you what it is has gotten you, a lonely existence haunting an empty building after you have run everyone out of it” “I am ready” she whispered floating back down to stand on the floor again. “Ready for what?” I snapped. “To pass over” she told me, making my kind spin out on me in joy. “I want you both to help me to pass on over” “That is great” I smiled at her and she suddenly smiled back, turning the haggard old woman into a beautiful young woman again. “Help me with Ian and then we will help you to get out of here and into the afterlife” “What is happening” Ian mumbled when we both started to help him back onto his feet again. “We have to get out of here” “I am ready to leave” Miss Jameson told him, smiling and he looked at me in shook, his eyes wide, hardly daring to believe what he was hearing. “Is this true?” he asked me unsure. “Yes” I smiled at his puzzled expression. “Yes it is, Miss Jameson has agreed to move on” “Janine, please” she told the two of us. “I am no longer Miss Jameson” “Then let’s get out of here” Ian grinned at her, seeing the bright sparkle of her eyes again. “The capsule is out front”
