Character assassination has always been in existence. It is the Sunnah of Allah that He tests those beloved to Him with those who hate and harm them. The Prophets, Companions, Awliya and pious servants of Allah were all ridiculed, falsely accused, cursed, and defamed; yet it did not slacken them from their mission. The disbelievers called our beloved Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) all sorts of insulting and blasphemous titles such as insane (majnun), magician (sahir) and the like, but he adopted patience, forgave them, supplicated for their guidance and carried on with his mission. As long as one’s connection with Allah is sound, there is no need to worry about what others say. One should not be affected by criticism, or by praise – since what really matters is the pleasure of Allah Most High
