Characteristics: 1.Social institutions are universal, i.e., they exist in all societies. 2.Social institutions are Standardized procedures and norms. 3.They are means of satisfying the needs of man. 4.Social institutions are abstract in nature, i.e., they are invisible and intangible. 5.Institutions are relatively Permanent and they don’t undergo sudden or rapid changes. Types: Considering different aspects, Institutions are classified as 1.Primary Institutions: Religion, Family etc. 2.Secondary Institutions: Education, Law, Business etc. W.G.Sumner classified Institutions into two types: 1.Creseive Institutions: Those which evolved naturally and unconsciously, like property, marriage, religion etc. 2.Enacted Institutions: These are consciously and purposefully established, like Education, Banks etc. E.W. Burgess has offered 4-fold classification: 1.Cultural Institutions: 2.Economic Institutions: 3.Recreational Institutions: 4.Social control Institutions: Functions of Social Institutions: The main functions of social Institutions are: 1.Institutions contribute to fulfillment of fundamental human needs, like self-perpetuation and self expression. 2.Institutions prescribe a particular way of behavior for the fulfillment of our needs. 3.Institutions help in controlling human behavior. 4.Institutions assign role and statuses to individuals. 5.They contribute to unity and uniformity in society.
