Check out several prominences (gas streaming along magnetic arches above the Sun) in this live solar view. The prominence at the lower right stands about three times as tall as the Earth! Visitors at the Phoebe Waterman Haas Public Observatory at the Museum in Washington, DC, are using a similar telescope to look safely at the Sun. A hydrogen-alpha telescope blocks out 99.999% of sunlight, letting through just one red color that reveals features of the solar atmosphere. Clouds sometimes block the view. The live stream is available until 3 pm EDT, weather permitting.
