Check out this awesome update from our Latin America group! It still feels as if we stole away in the night. Dock, boat, bus, gas stations, mountains, pueblos, and neon bright cities passed in the twilight mist. Our final impressions of Guatemala gleaned in bursts of excitement, song and fitful sleep. In the morning, we said our last farewells to Guatemala and boarded a plane to Roatan. Roatan is a small island in the Caribbean situated just off the Honduran Coast. The island is a mecca for scuba divers, as it borders one of the largest coral reefs in the world. Our hostel, Buena Onda, was simple, but very comfortable and it quickly became a home for us. We spent our days diving and our evenings studying, cooking, and enjoying each others company. The reef was incredible. We swam through and under cliffs of towering coral and schools of glittering fish. Under the surface of the water, the world seems to take on an uncanny sort of glow and in the midst of our exercises it occurred to me that we were floating and actually breathing in a dimension of life on earth that few human beings have ever witnessed. I feel truly blessed for the experience. We completed our training in four days. On Tuesday evening, we received our certification. We celebrated with pizza and a movie. The next day, a group of us deep-dived to a shipwreck at 100 feet. The rest of the group held back, prepared lunch and took time to rest and explore the island a little before we all met back at the hostel. We ended our adventures in Roatan with an appreciation circle and a large breakfast before heading back to the airport to continue on to Nicaragua for the second half of our journey.
