This summer (2014) we will offering a new course with a working title of Causes and Consequences of Fatal Wildfires offered by John Maclean (author of Fire on the Mountain and three other books on wildfire, and son of Norman Maclean, author of Young Men and Fire). Ive included the course description below. This is a one week course that will be offered twice, beginning on May 19th and May 26th. The enrollment period for our summer courses has just opened; class sizes are limited to 10 students. Topics in Ecology and Sustainability: Fire Ecology 00L:034 EX1 (IALL:1034) and 00L:034 EX1 (IALL:1034) The one-week fire ecology course is appropriate for undergraduate students in ecology, natural resources management, environmental sciences, and biology. It will survey the modern history of wildland fire in America told through the stories of representative fires. It will use associated field trips to investigate fire effects and fire management, and the class will participate in a prescribed burn, if possible. The course will begin with the horrific Big Burn of 1910, which has influenced fire control policy for generations, and proceed to present-day problems of an expanding wildland-urban interface, warming trends that result in violent fire and extended fire seasons, and mounting fire suppression costs in a time of budgetary restraint – all issues that surfaced in the Yarnell Hill Fire of 2013, which cost the lives of 19 hotshot firefighters. The one-week fire ecology will be offered twice, May 19-23 and May 26-30. Class sizes are limited to 10 students each.
