Chekov Theatre Festival closes in Moscow The A.P. Chekov International Theatre Festival, which opened for the 11th time in Moscow on 19 May, finished on Sunday. It was announced that all performances in the festival programme were held with full audiences. The theatre forum programme consisted of three parts: the world series, the P.N. Fomenko Memorial Moscow theatre programme, and the regional programme called ‘Plays of the 11th Chekov International Theatre Festival and International Festival Projects in Russia and Riga’. According to the International Theatre Festival’s General Director Valeria Shadrina, the organisers this year expanded the boundaries of the festival, which went beyond the capital’s borders. A regional programme was implemented, within which the festival plays were shown in Saint Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Samara, Voronezh and Khanty-Mansiysk. Audiences saw new works by Robert Lepage, Matthew Bourne, James Thierree, Victoria Thierree-Chaplin, and Maria Pages, a unique performer of Spanish flamenco. For the first time within the festival, a play from Portugal was performed in a production by director Ricardo Pais. Muscovites became acquainted with the art of choreographer Lin Li-Chen (The Legend Lin Dance Theatre from Taipei). Also participating for the first time in the Chekov Festival was the Israeli group ‘Bathsheva Dance Company’ with a play in a production by Ohad Naharin. Young Belorussian director Ekaterina Averkova debuted in the festival’s World Series with the play ‘Office’ (Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre). Source: inmsk.ru
