Chennai City’s Property Tax counters may be manned by Bank officers Chennai Corporation is planning to use the services of bank employees to man counters for remittance of property tax at all 200 ward offices of Chennai. Chennai Corporation officials are likely to meet representatives of banks on Monday to finalize the proposal. A few months ago, zonal-level officials were directed by the civic body to identify structures suitable for setting up counters where property tax could be remitted. Enumeration of the existing facilities in all ward offices has also been completed. But as the lack of adequate civic body personnel to man these counters had emerged a challenge, the civic body has mooted the idea of using the services of bank personnel. Some Chennai Corporation officials, however, have voiced their concerns about the permission likely to be given to banks to access the master records of the Chennai Corporation under the new system. “The outsourced employees of banks may be able to collect data on usage and ownership of the property. Risk of land grabbing by using the data may increase in such a case. We have to be cautious,” said an employee of the Corporation. The civic body had earlier set a target of setting up 2,000 bank counters in the city for walk-in payment of property tax to improve tax collection. But the counters are yet to prove popular. The dedicated tax collection facilities in each ward office are expected to facilitate hassle-free payment of the tax for the over 11 lakh assessees in the city. As those assessees opting for online and electronic clearing service mode of property tax payment get receipts after a delay, many opt for a system that will generate a receipt immediately.
