Chewing gum has its place. As a music teacher, the worst thing that I could imagine seeing during a concert is my HS choir and one person is chewing gum. At contest time, it was pretty awful for a judge to see it. I also have done weddings and tell ALL participants to please spit out your gum before walking up the aisle. And then, there is the cracking and snapping and chewing with your mouth open. Of course, chewing gum is a bit of an art.
