Chick-Chick...or is it Cluck-Cluck...or maybe its Henny-Penny - TopicsExpress

Chick-Chick...or is it Cluck-Cluck...or maybe its Henny-Penny ...well, the new pet-client Doc saw this morning doesnt really have an official name...but neither do any of her 7 chicken-hen-mates. They all look exactly alike and all go by the same name of...well, whatever works to get them to come to you. Unfortunately, that was the problem for this little hen-lady today...she wasnt coming to anyone...not walking and not laying her daily eggs like all the other ladies...for 2 days! She was pretty much livin a funky-chicken life...she wasnt feeling perky and her owners were rightly concerned. Next step: a Noahs Ark Pet Hospital visit! After performing the hens exam, an ex-ray showed exactly what Doc had determined might be the issue...an egg-bound chicken, aka: stuck-egg. This can be a serious condition for a chicken and a vet-intervention is sometimes the best and the most necessary course of treatment. Here are a few reasons for an egg-bound hen: 1: Egg is too big for the hens pelvis. 2: Egg could be double yoked and thus extra large. 3: Hen could have a genetic issue that makes laying difficult. 4: There might be a calcium deficiency in the hens diet. 5: Too much protein in a hens diet can also cause an egg to bind. 6: Internal worms, stress, dehydration are also things to consider. Doc gave our hen a shot of oxytocin...yup, just like what expectant mothers sometimes receive...to help get things moving. Along with a little bit of lubricant syringed into her vent (the orifice where chicken poop as well as the egg passes) she was placed back in a kennel...and we waited...and waited...and then... Voila! The egg!! A small-ish egg, but still a successful laying. Now its rest and time for rebuilding strength for Chick-Chick...or is it Cluck-Cluck...or maybe its Henny-Penny...
