China CDC Laboratory Team and a China-aided Mobile Laboratory Arrived in Sierra Leone 2014/09/18 On 17 September, 2014, two China-chartered airplanes carrying a China Center for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) laboratory team and a China-aided mobile laboratory arrived at Lungi International Airport of Sierra Leone. Chinese Ambassador Zhao Yanbo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Samura Kamara, Minister of Transport and Aviation Mr. Leonard Koroma, Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation Mr. Foday Sawi and other senior Sierra Leonean officials attended the arrival ceremony held at the airport. CCTV News, Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Awoko Newspaper and other media organizations covered the event. Ambassador Zhao stated that in response to the appeal of WHO and the Sierra Leonean government, Chinese government had sent a China CDC laboratory team and a mobile laboratory to Sierra Leone, by chartering two airplanes and flying over 14 countries to carry the team and the laboratory here to Sierra Leone today, which demonstrated fast delivery, urgent need and prompt results of Chinas assistance in attacking Ebola. The China CDC laboratory team is comprised of 59 personnel. Among them, 29 medical experts are dispatched by China CDC, and they will run the mobile laboratory. The other 30 doctors and nurses come from 302 Military Hospital of China which played a crucial role in China’s fight against SARS epidemic in 2003, and they will run a holding center at Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital. The team will work in the hospital for 6 months. Ambassador Zhao hoped that Chinas efficient and timely support will strengthen Sierra Leones capabilities of the prevention and control of Ebola. In their responses, Foreign Minister Kamara, Transport Minister Koroma and Deputy Health Minister Sawi expressed their deep appreciation to the Chinese government and people for responding to Sierra Leone’s distress call and providing speedy and substantial assistance to Sierra Leone. They stated that China took the lead in assisting Sierra Leone, and indicated that China’s assistance gave Sierra Leone a strong sense of hope and confidence, and would surely strengthen Sierra Leone’s capabilities in containing Ebola. They emphasized that China’s timely support demonstrated China is a true friend and always stands with Sierra Leone. This is the third batch of Chinas emergency medical aid to Sierra Leone. Previously, China provided two batches of emergency medical materials valued at 11 million Yuan (equally 1.8 million USD) to Sierra Leone and sent two medical expert teams to the country.
