China Gives US$4m to AFL-Engineering Battalion (mylbsonline/Liberia/March 1, 2014)-The People’s Republic of China has donated equipment, valued at US$4m, intended for use by the Engineering Battalion of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL). Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Zhang Yue, said: “Experts from China are due in Liberia next month to train the Engineering Battalion on the usage and maintenance of the equipment.” Ambassador Zhang also noted: “For the past ten years my government has donated nearly US$10m for military assistance to the AFL.” “Seven AFL soldiers will travel to China soon for training purpose.” He expressed his government’s willingness to continue helping Liberia in its reconstruction drive. The Chinese Ambassador spoke Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the Barclay Training Center (BTC) in Monrovia when he presented the equipment. Defense Minister, Brownie Samukai, received the equipment on behalf of the Commander In-Chief of the AFL, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Receiving the equipment, Minister Samukai commended the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for its continued support to Liberia. He assured Ambassador Zhang that the equipment will be maintained to the fullest. Meanwhile Defense Minister Samukai says: “The US Government has promised to donate equipment valued at more than US$3m to the Engineering Battalion of the Armed Forces of Liberia.” AL Jabatehso speaking at the occasion, the Acting Head of the Cabinet, Morris Dukuly, lauded the People’s Republic of China for the gesture. Mr. Dukuly added: “The numerous contributions the Government of the People’s Republic of China has made to Liberia’s development programs cannot be overemphasized.” He made the statement on behalf of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, currently in the Nigerian Capital, Abuja, attending that country’s 100th Anniversary celebration. Mr. Dukuly is also serving in the Liberian Government as Minister of Internal Affairs. He was, however, designated by the Liberian Leader to act on her behalf as Head of the Cabinet while she is away to Nigeria for the anniversary celebration. By Patrick Flomo
