@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ China still encourages AL, BNP to resolve differences --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Li Jun Thursday said his country still encourages Bangladeshs two major political parties to resolve their differences through a peaceful dialogue for a lasting political stability, reports UNB. We still encourage the two political parties (AL and BNP) to find a solution through a constructive dialogue…the two major parties shoulder a special responsibility to make the political situation in Bangladesh much more stable, said the envoy. Li Jun, however, said holding another national election depends fully on the people of Bangladesh as the January 5 polls boycotted by the oppositions experienced low voter turnout. I think this is an issue to be decided by the people of Bangladesh because you (BD people) know the countrys situation much better than outsiders. Youre the real players, he added. The Chinese diplomat made the remarks during his interactions with the diplomatic correspondents at the Jatiya Press Club. Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (Dcab) arranged the event - Dcab Talks - with its President Mainul Alam in the chair. Dcab General Secretary Angur Nahar Monty was also present. The diplomat, however, expressed his satisfaction over the just-held upazila parishad elections and termed those local government elections peaceful and positive developments as candidates backed by BNP and other opposition parties took part in it. Asked why China congratulated new government after an election boycotted by major party BNP and its allies, Li Jun said China follows the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. He also clarified Chinas position saying they found that the elections held in line with Bangladeshs constitution and the rule of law is the fundamental principle in international relations. Soon after the much-talked-about January 5 elections, the United States called for fresh polls terming the election deeply flawed one while many western countries also expressed displeasure on how the elections took places in which 153 PMs were elected uncontested. BSS adds: The Chinese ambassador said Beijing congratulated Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina acknowledging the January 5 elections despite opposition boycott as it was required to be held to comply with the constitutional obligation. Asked why China congratulated a government, which the questioner said, was installed in polls held without voters and participation of the main opposition party, Li said the same principle led Beijing in welcoming the Sheikh Hasina on her election for the second consecutive term. The envoy said he also found some positive developments in the post polls period when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) took part in local government polls deviating from their stance from boycotting the national elections and expected that the political dialogue could bridge the gaps between the two major parties. China was one of the first countries which felicitated Sheikh Hasina after the polls as the elections reinstalled Awami League for the second consecutive term. A politically stable and economically prosperous Bangladesh will certainly help the balance of international forces develop toward a direction conducive to the world peace and the establishment of a more just and fair international order, the ambassador said. Replying to a question, Li ruled out the validity of an old perception that better ties with either of Bangladeshs two major neighbours India and China would annoy the other. He said Bangladesh could exploit its enhanced ties with both the countries as China and India could contribute to its development. Li said under new round of multi-sectoral reform policy adopted last, Beijing intends to open up further aiming to double both its GDP and per capita income by 2020 compared to what those were in 2010 and make China all round moderate prosperous country. He said in line with the reforms, China started pursuing enhanced connectivity with regional nations under grand ideas like Silk Road, Economic Corridor, Maritime Silk Road of 21st Century and BCIM Economic Corridor. The envoy said being expected that in the next five years, Chinas import would reach some US$10 trillion and its outbound investment would reach $500 billion. As the Chinese ambassador in Dhaka, what I am interested most and working hard for is that Bangladesh deserves to have a proper share in the process, Li said. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
