Chinasa couldn’t bear it anymore, shouting on top of her voice - TopicsExpress

Chinasa couldn’t bear it anymore, shouting on top of her voice “who came to my corner, who came here again; what did I do to you people?” Chinasa knew nobody would answer her, however, she was convinced that after the shouting bout, it would take extra courage for anybody to approach her corner let alone stealling from her. One by one she confronted her roommates. Chinasa: Derby, did you take my sanitary pad? Derby: No! Chinasa: Did you touch my provision? Derby: No! Chinasa: Peace, I’m looking for my sanitary pad. The whole pack, did you take it? Peace: What for? No! Chinasa: Did you touch my Milo and Dano milk? Peace: Please I have more than enough. I have no reason to touch yours. Chinasa: Sandra, please did you take my sanitary pad? Sandra: These questions are embarrassing, but I will answer you just for one reason. I did not. Chinasa: My Milo and Dano have been reduced by half. Did you touch them? Sandra: Chinasa, no! Chinasa posed the same questions to the remaining four roommates to which everyone of them denied. She stood up, undressed and tied her towel over her chest and walked out of the room. The roommates did not know exactly what to make out of her silence. Peace: But who is taking her things? We are only seven in this room and we can’t say she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Chika: Whoever is taking her things should stop it. It is not fair. Another wave of silence enveloped the room the moment they heard the sound of some footsteps approach their room. It was Chinasa. She enters the room and quietly climbs into her bed. Nkem and Chiamaka did not want to remain in the room as the atmosphere was too tense for their comfort. Nkem: Who does she think she is? She touches people’s stuff but goes mad whenever somebody touches her things. Chiamaka: But Nkem, that was too much. How could you take a whole pack of sanitary pads and you still went ahead to take her provision? Nkem: is it because I told you I touched them? Abeg, stop asking me questions. Chiamaka: What did Chika think she was doing? Warning us? Nkem: I don’t have her time yet. They will be claiming that their parents and boyfriends have money and they will still be shouting when somebody touches their things Chiamaka: But that is not enough reason to take people’s stuff without first informing them. Nkem: I have heard, Madam Preacher. All has not been well ever since Chinasa confronted her roommates over her missing items. It has become a case of “to your tents Oh Israel.” The ladies have been divided into cliques. Chinasa and Sandra seem to get along not withstanding the fact that Sandra is very vocal and does not hesitate to give it back to any of the ladies that crosses her way. A phone call interrupts the silence that has become a way of life whenever all the girls are in the room. Chinasa stares at the phone, looks in the direction of the other girls and slowly turns her back to them. Chinasa: Hello, Ebuka, please give me some minutes. I need to tidy my corner and lock up some things before coming. We now have thieves in our room. Just some minutes and I will be with you. Sandra: Hehe. Ebeano Hostel thieves. Chuckles Sandra… The rest of the girls refused to be drawn into the discussion; however, Chinasa continued to taunt them. Turning to Sandra, Chinasa smiles and tries to high five her. She misses Sandra’s palm. Both ladies know exactly what Chinasa wants to achieve by constantly harping on her missing items. Chinasa: You this girl, why were you laughing? Sandra: Hmm… You told Ebuka our room has become a den of thieves. Chinasa: Did I lie? Sandra: Girls, biko, our room should be a house of prayers not a den of thieves Peace: The truth is that I didn’t touch anybody’s things. So please count me out of the so called thieves. My God has been supplying my needs according to His riches in glory. Sandra: Baby, preach! Chinasa: Peace, you are not one of them. The thieves know themselves. All this while, Nkem had been on her bed pretending to be listening to music on her iPod. She wasn’t sure who Chinasa and Sandra had in mind as the thief but the fact that the two ladies think Peace couldn’t have been involved in the act narrowed the number to herself and the other roommates she relates well with. Chinasa: Sandra, Ebuka is at the garden. You want to say hi? Sandra: Yeah, our in-law is around Chinasa: Who’s your in-law? Sandra: Our in-law. We are preparing you for him Chinasa: You are not serious. I don’t know what you are talking about The two ladies storm out of the room to the relief of the rest of the other ladies especially Nkem, who didn’t move her body while the entire conversation lasted. Immediately the door closed, Nkem draws a long hiss. Nkem: Fools. Empty drums make the most noise. Peace not wanting to be dragged into the issue, quietly left the room without uttering a word. .
