Choosing a Helper And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. -Genesis 2:18-20. As an editor, one of my tasks was to help create an author team for the companys new geometry textbook. Several candidates from all over the country applied. All applicants were carefully scrutinized for this project. The project required five or six authors, and my job was to exclude those who wouldnt fit well with the company or the editorial team. All candidates had the proper credentials and wanted to be on the team. I needed more information in order to make an intelligent selection. Specifically, I needed to know who could write well, who could stick to a schedule, and how each interacted with others on the team. This team would ultimately partner with the company. Our team deemed that one of the applicants was untruthful on the application. Another lacked in another quality. Eventually we created a team of five strong applicants. Adam may not have been aware of his personal needs, but God noticed he needed a partner. God suggested he choose one from among the existing animals, but Adam rejected them. Though he could tame them or train them to serve him, none qualified as a partner. When God suggested Adam find a friend to keep him company, Adam saw that each animal fell short of what might work for him. No animal could measure up to him intellectually or emotionally. He needed a peer. Prayer : Our Loving Father in Heaven, forgive us. Sometimes we want to tell our partner what to do. Sometimes we feel more important than our partner. Adam shows us our basic need is in one another. Help us appreciate each other for who we already are. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen.
