Chosen to be Gods Children 1 Peter 2:1-10 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, Gods own people in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. I Peter 2:9 (NRSV) On a trip back to the days of my childhood and youth, I recall neighborhood games or school sports when there was the choosing up of sides. Can you return to the days of your childhood and youth and remember what that was like? The two best players amongst the group served as team captains. They were the favored ones ... gifted with ability and skills. They then in turn chose individuals to be on their team ... this one because she was a good dribbler, that one because he could run fast, and another one because he or she was a good catcher. Ill take him. Well, Ill take her. The group of some ten to twenty players would be divided up until there were only two left. Oh, let me be the next to the last chosen because at least then I really am chosen and not the leftover which neither team really wanted. You see no one wanted to be chosen last because he or she was not really a choice! Being husky as a child, lacking athletic prowess and not having good hand and eye coordination, that is where I often found myself ... being chosen last, which really is no choice. Being chosen by God is not dependent upon what we can do ... to hit the ball the greatest distance, to gain the most baskets, or to run the fastest. Our belief, our faith in Christ is what makes us numbered among Gods chosen ones! Our being chosen is not based on what we can do, but what God does. It is not based on what we can do, but if we can believe! And there is wonderful news for those like myself who have anxiously waited in line to be chosen and often found themselves being chosen last. In Ephesians 1:3-4 we read, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the worldto be holy and blameless before Him in love. We were chosen before we existed. We were chosen before the foundation of the world. That is how much God in Christ loves us! With that sensational news, it makes dealing with being chosen last here on earth much easier to accept. PRAYER O God, we thank You that we know ourselves to be numbered among Your chosen ones. Guard us from pride that would cause us to look down on others, esteeming that they are not numbered among Your chosen ones. Remind us that being Your chosen ones, we are called to live honorable lives and to proclaim Your mighty deeds. In Christs name, we pray. Amen. By Alan Harvey
