Sep 19 2014 : The Times of India (Mumbai) East Indian party to field 5 candidates Mumbai: TIMES NEWS NETWORK The Maharashtra Swaraj Party (MSP), a fledgling political outfit floated by East Indian activists, will field five candidates from the suburbs in the assembly election. The outfit, yet to be registered as a political party, plans to go pan-state later, said MSP chief Godfrey Pimenta. “This election, our candidates will stand as independents but we will try to get common symbols for them,“ said Pimenta. Constituencies will be announced once the bigger political alliances make their plans clear as any division of votes could benefit MSP candidates, he added. The initiative was first announced a few weeks ago with East Indian community groups like Mobai Gaothan Panchayat joining hands with around 50 citizen groups, NGOs and Catholic forums to fight for political representation, starting with the assembly election. The partys name was inspired by East Indian freedom fighter and the citys first mayor of Indian origin, Joseph `Kaka Baptista, a close associate of Tilak. Joseph (KAKA) Baptista was a FREEDOM FIGHTER, Who was the companion of Lokmanya Tilak in his Freedom Struggle. The popular slogan, SWARAJYA HAA MAZA jANMASIDDHA HAKKA AAHE, ANI THO MI MILVINARACH, was coined by Kaka Baptista and was popularised by Tilak.
