Christmas Devotion for Wednesday, Dec-2: The Heart of Christmas Last year our family chose to incorporate a new tradition. We decided to have Advent boxes go along with the lighting of our Advent candles. It was awesome to see Katelynn’s enthusiasm as she opened each box to reveal a figurine that she could apply to completing the manger scene. On Christmas day, it was particularly special as we watched her open the last box to reveal a figurine of baby Jesus. Her joy and excitement were unmistakable as she placed the final piece between Mary and Joseph. “Mary responded, ‘Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me!’ ” (Luke 1:46-49, NLT) As I reflect on this scene with our daughter, I am reminded of the importance of making Jesus the focus. His birth brought great joy to the world! So, why is this so difficult to attain during the holiday season? Christmas is supposed to be a season filled with family traditions, gift giving, warm memories and holiday cheer. And yet, it can be a time of frustration and disappointment as we strive for perfection, aim to fulfill unrealistic expectations, and attempt to mend broken relationships. When I pause to think about everything God has done for me, I am reminded of His most precious gift, Jesus! All of these pursuits pale in comparison. Drawing near to God and seeking Him by spending time in prayer and Bible study is more important than ever. It brings perspective of what Christmas is truly about and peace to an anxious heart. It renews my spirit as I prepare for the celebration, and it allows me to extend His grace and love to others. Join me this holiday season in preparing your heart to celebrate His birth. Let’s worship Him this Christmas with joy, adoration, and passion! ~ Jennifer Walder Rizer You can download all 25 devotions for the month of December at fbcsheridanwy.org/resources/advent-2014/ If you prefer a hard copy of this devotional, contact Pastor Falk ([email protected])
