Christmas Memories Day 5: We are receiving some of our first wintery weather today--encountered some freezing rain and snow on the way to work. Christmas morning at our house (growing up) didnt start until my Dad got out of bed. We would beg and plead for what seemed like hours to get him to join us in the living room! Im sure it only lasted for a few minutes....after the gifts were opened we would have a big breakfast that included eggs, bacon and homemade cinnamon or carmel rolls from Grandma Jefferis. Then, Dad would head out to the barn to milk the cows. The rest of us would clean up the Christ-mess and gather everything we needed to go to Grandma Copemans house--or to head off to whichever aunt/uncle were hosting that year. One particular year we had a LOT of snow and the roads were horrid...and we were running behind schedule. (did I mention milking the cows?) In any case, Christmas was at Uncle Bills house. My Dad decided to save time by taking the shortcut road. It really is a road now-a-days....but back then it wasnt much more than a field driveway and no one lived back in there. Of course, we got stuck.....had to put chains on the tires.....we kids were way too little to help....cell phones didnt exist...relatives were calling the house to see where we were, (not there), out checking the regular roads, (not there) ....certainly Rod wouldnt have taken THAT road.... ....over the years we have traveled with our own children in nasty white-out conditions, fog, snow, freezing rain, -80 below zero weather....with sick kids....times when it would have been much smarter to just stay at our own house.....However, we all know how the song goes..Oh theres no place like home for the holidays......because there really is no place like it!
