Chromium, a trace mineral, has been shown to have a strong connection to blood glucose regulation. Insulin is a hormone produced in and released by our pancreas in response to elevated blood sugars (glucose). It binds to insulin receptors on cells and signals glucose uptake. Chromium is believed to facilitate insulin and enhance the uptake of glucose and other nutrients. It is thought to stimlulate fat metabolism and to have a lowering effect on cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well. Foods rich in chromium include: brewers yeast/beer, broccoli, brown rice, cheese, organ meats, oysters, mushrooms, and whole grains.
