Cikapundung Lava, West Java: an Example of the Pāhoehoe-̀Àā - TopicsExpress

Cikapundung Lava, West Java: an Example of the Pāhoehoe-̀Àā Lava Transition (?) Hot spot has been suggested by many researchers as the “factory” of the Pāhoehoe lava type. Since year 1884, when the first Hawaiian term Pāhoehoe and Àā were introduced to the scientific literature, they succeeded to attract the attention of people all around the world, including volcanologist. Although dramatic progresses in volcanology have been and are being archived up to present 21st century, the existing of the Pāhoehoe lava type in subduction area is still subject to ongoing debate. Cikapundung River, West Java, consists of both Pāhoehoe and Àā lava types. This research aims at casting light on the cause of the type of lava surface on Cikapundung River constrained by petrological and geochemical studies. Cikapundung lavas consist of basaltic andesite belonging to high K-series with high Th/Yb (>3) and Ba/La (15-16) ratios indicate the involvement of subducted sediment into the magma genesis causing depolymerization that will decrease magma viscosity and allowing Àā lava transformed into Pāhoehoe lava and vice versa.
