Citizens from Allegheny County were left in dismay after a Humane Officer who was called to look into the abandonment of over 70 cats, removed two cats sent the rest of them to be euthanized. Kathy Hecker, a Humane Officer that works at a shelter in Pittsburgh, went to check out the hoarding and abandonment of over 70 cats in the town of Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The cats were found without food and water, after the tenant of the home – Jennifer Fix – was evicted. To everyone’s surprise, Hecker removed two cats from the premises, but refused to take the other ones “because most of them were too sick or too wild to be rescued” – according to a statement from the agency hired to trap and remove the remaining cats. No less than 72 cats were thus removed and put down. Meanwhile, the neighbors were told the cats would end up in a Pittsburgh shelter, where they would be taken care of. Cats that were removed from traps before being taken by the wildlife exterminators appears to be in a good state of health, after being checked out by a vet. However, none of the 72 cats were for health and temperament before they were euthanized. Animal abandonment is punishable according to Pennsylvania law. However, Hecker was too busy destroying the cats and didn’t get the change to file charges against Jennifer Fix. And given the current situation, it is unlikely she will ever do so, because the cats, that are considered as “evidence” have already been taken away from the house. As the founder of Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue, Becky L. Morrow, puts it, “it is an absolute breach of duty when an officer sworn to protect animals not only sends seventy-two cats to be put down without a proper veterinary opinion, but in doing so, also takes away any change of prosecuting the person responsible for this”. Everyone in town was relieved to see that a Humane Officer had gotten involved in the case. Everyone thought the cats would end up safely and Fix would be prosecuted. It went terribly wrong, however and the only person responsible for this is officer Hecker. We, the undersigned, feel that offier Hecker’s handling of the situation was completely unprofessional. It is a clear breach of conduct and thus this officer must be releaved of any further duties. She is not fit to work for the Humane Society any longer. We ask that officer Hecker be releaved of duty as soon as possible. Sign the petition if you agree! I started the petition based on the information I found here: digitaljournal/pr/2154644
