City Airport is an historic airfield - as Barton Aerodrome, - TopicsExpress

City Airport is an historic airfield - as Barton Aerodrome, opening in 1930 we were the first purpose built municipal aerodrome in the UK, and also boast the oldest control tower in continual operational use in the world! With such a rich history there are many artifacts charting our history over the last nine decades, including photographs, uniforms, models and aircraft parts. These are managed by the Barton Aerodrome Heritage Society, (BAHS), which is supported by City Airport and other organisations such as Manchester Metropolitan University and the Lancashire Aero Club. For many years, BAHS has provided a small museum - known as The Visitor Centre - which is open to the public, in a portakabin located in the airports main car park. This portakabin has fallen in to a state of disrepair and therefore the museum will relocate to a new facility on the airfield later in the year. BAHS is now seeking volunteers to help support the important work that they do. If would be able to devote some time to tasks such as cleaning models, sorting and tidying artifacts or setting up the new museum itself, please drop an email to the museums curator Eric Isaac via [email protected]
