City of Milwaukee labor negotiators will ask police and firefighter unions to approve giving higher pay raises to union members who continue to live in the city in their next contracts, Mayor Tom Barrett said in a Newsmakers interview. Barrett said he “absolutely” will ask police and firefighter unions to accept that change as a “positive reinforcement” for employees to remain Milwaukee residents. A new city ordinance allows city residents to get bigger pay raises, but the change does not apply to current contracts with police and firefighter unions. The mayor criticized a state budget provision abolishing residency requirements statewide, with the exception that emergency workers can be required to live within 15 miles. Barrett said abolishing the residency requirement, which is being challenged in court, violates “home rule” authority given the city in 1924.
