City of Suffolk, VA Position Sanitation Equipment Operator Full Time Yes Pay Range 26828.00 - 42005.00/Year Primary Responsibilities Under general supervision, performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in the transfer of refuse and debris from collection sites to the SPSA landfill for the Public Works Department. Work involves operating such heavy equipment as heavy trucks, boom trucks, dump trucks, leaf vacuum trucks, street sweepers, etc. Employee is responsible for manipulating such vehicles with considerable skill and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. Employee is also responsible for performing minor preventive maintenance on equipment; and performing various duties to assist department labor crews. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks. Reports to the Sanitation Field Supervisor. Working knowledge of the operation of motorized equipment used in sanitation operations and skills in the use and operation of various heavy trucks is preferred. Minimum Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including heavy trucks, boom trucks, dump trucks, leaf vacuum trucks, street sweepers, etc.; and hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pitch forks, etc. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are those for Medium Work. Required Education Graduation from high school or equivalent Required Job Experience 1 to 2 years of experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment Certifications Required Must possess a valid CDL or CDL Learners Permit (must be able to obtain CDL within 6 months of hire date).
