Civil Air Patrol, Maryland Wing Band Plays To Energized Health Fair Attendees At Walter Reed National Military Medical Center By Maj Guilford Queen, CAP Group 1 Public Affairs Officer July 15, 2014, Bethesda Maryland. Ten members of the Maryland Wing, Civil Air Patrol Band brought their instruments and high energy skills to the Health Fair at Walter Reed National Medical Center. Eve with a last minute change of location due to forecasted rain the Band showed up raring to play for those who serve in the armed forces. The health fair featured numerous areas of interest in general health, preventive medicine, pastoral care & resiliency, education, military career advancement, industrial hygiene and related military family services. Representatives from the American Red Cross, Military Family Life and Welfare and Recreation were also represented. Held in the Great Hall of the hospital building, tables were set up at for the fair participants. The CAP Band was placed in the interior of the rectangular setting of tables set up for the health fair representatives. Major George Carroll, the band’s conductor and the the assembled musicians played for over an hour to the delight of the attendees. High energy versions of American Patrol, Back Bay Shuffle, In The Mood and Oye Como Va were on musical display. Mellow selection like Moonlight Serenade were also featured. Dr Nelson Guadelupe of the hospital staff said they sound really good, I’m glad you could play today.” 1st Lt Regine Fuacher, Walter Reed’s Junior Officer President stopped by the Band’s area, met the band members and discussed possible future performances with Maj Carroll. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs about 85 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFCC with saving an average of 70 lives annually. Its unpaid professionals also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction mission at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 25,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. Performing missions for America for over 70 years, CAP will receive the Congressional Medal in 2015 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans. The wing was credited with five finds and one life saved. Maryland Wing flew 32 missions for the State of Maryland. Members flew 2,106 hours in all mission categories.
